Hey There!
Happy Thursday! I hope you’re having a great week. As always, keep on scrolling down the ol’ page and/or check out my video for all the latest.
Well, it’s a gray, slushy, icky day here. But the good news is, we have a giveaway winner! Last night, I randomly selected a subscriber, Jason, to win the $25 Bookshop.org gift card! I contacted Jason to let him know and sent the card his way earlier this morning!
I did the giveaway as a way to say thank you for continuing to follow me and support what I do. It sincerely means a lot to me.
In No Spell Lasts Forever news, we are ridiculously close to finishing up the first issue! Aimée is on track to finish the art next week, and I kind of can’t believe it! We’ve poured so much time and heart into this comic, and it’s so exciting to be this close to putting it out into the world.
I’m also editing the next comic I’ve been working on. I had an awesome editing session with James Powell a few days ago (whose comics are fantastic — check them out!). And it really got me thinking about the way I approach my writing. I think there are things I can do during the planning stage that will be better suited for the way my brain works, lol. I’m someone who needs to-do lists for everything, I’m constantly setting notifications in my phone, etc. I need to spell things out and write them down for myself or I’ll forget. But in terms of creating outlines for my comics, I’ve only been doing that with the plot points. And I think I need to start systematically outlining the themes and the emotional beats in the same way, and not just assuming I’ll hold them in my head and get them into the story intuitively. Like I said, that’s not how my brain works. This felt like a big ah-ha moment for me, and I think it could potentially be really helpful.
As far as stuff I’m reading, I circled back to the third volume of Monstress, by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda, and I’m continuing to love it. Everything about this comic is so good!
And I’ve also been reading 3 Worlds/3 Moons over on Jonathan Hickman, Mike del Mundo, and Mike Huddleston’s Substack. They’re doing some pretty epic worldbuilding over there, and I’m excited to see where they go with it. The art is gorgeous, of course, and I love the dichotomy they’re setting up between magic and science. I also really like the sci-fi family element — it feels a little bit like Lost in Space in that way, and I’m into it!
Well, that’s it for me this week! As always, you can find me on Instagram, @sarahcookewriter and @nospellcomic, and Twitter, @sarahcookewrite.
Have a great day!
Best,
Sarah
