Hey Everyone!
Happy Thursday! I wanted to try a video update this time, so click below to check it out! Or if you’d rather read about my updates, just scroll down.
No Spell Lasts Forever is really coming along! I’m making some last minor edits, but overall it’s in really good shape and I’m excited about it. I feel like I’ve grown immensely as a writer over the course of writing and editing this comic, and it’s pretty gratifying.
The mailing list is continuing to grow. I’m getting close to the minimum number of subscribers I think I need to have before launching a crowdfunding campaign. And that means I’m getting closer to making NSLF a reality! Yay!
And my lettering is going well. I’ve been practicing on unlettered pages from comics I enjoy that I’ve found online, and with the inks of pages that are in process from NSLF. It’s a really fun and interesting craft! And as a writer who’s not an artist, it’s exciting to think about potentially being able to contribute something visual to the finished comic.
Something else I’ve been thinking about this week is Alan Moore’s Writing for Comics. I read it over the weekend and really enjoyed it. One point he made that I thought was particularly interesting was about where his ideas originate. He says for him, he thinks it’s about learning to recognize what’s unique about your own way of seeing the world, and generating ideas from those insights. This is something I’ve experienced, and I think I first started to notice it when I was writing a lot of poetry. Something I saw or experienced would inspire a particular thought or image or turn of phrase, and that would be the basis for a poem. I hadn’t put it into words before, though. This is the way he describes it:
“It [generating ideas] becomes a matter of tuning your perceptions to notice little quirks of circumstance that might otherwise slip by unnoticed, studying your own behavior and the behavior of people around you, until you feel you have developed a coherent angle upon life and reality, at least one which relates to a perspective upon events that will suggest original and individual story ideas.”
Well, that’s pretty much it for this week. As always, find me on Instagram, @sarahcookewriter and @nospellcomic. And if you know anyone who might be interested in getting these updates, I’d love it if you could send them my way!
Have a great Thursday!
Best,
Sarah
