So much good stuff!
Happy Thursday! I hope you’re having a great week! As always, feel free to watch my video and/or keep on reading for the latest updates.
This week I had a really lovely Comics Chat conversation with John Edingfield II and Ryan Kroboth, the co-creators of the fantasy adventure comic Wurst & Mayhem. We chatted about their work, and about one of their favorite comics, Skullkickers, by Jim Zub, Edwin Huang, and Misty Coats. I enjoyed their insights, and it was really wonderful to see their friendship. The two of them seem to genuinely enjoy each other’s company. And not only does that make for a great creative conversation, but it’s also just really lovely on a human level.
And I had a wonderful conversation with Jesse Judy on Instagram. We chatted about the upcoming campaign for his anime-style adventure comic, Ashes of Eden. He had some really interesting comments about how, for him as a writer, it’s the relationships between the characters that drive everything and inform the world-building. Check it out!
Also, the fifth and final episode of No Spell Lasts Forever #2 is available to read for free on my Substack and GlobalComix! Now that the whole issue has been posted, I’ll be making physical copies available for purchase in my shop shortly.
Aside from all that, I’ve mostly been writing and editing this week. I’m making progress with the streamlined version of Scorned April, and I’m writing a Mayfly short for the sci-fi anthology I’m editing with Lesser Known Comics. Speaking of which…
Faster Than Light: A Sci-Fi Anthology About Family, is open for submissions through July 31! If you’re interested in submitting, shorts should be up to 8 pages, and should focus on members of a sci-fi family — but that includes found family. So friends who feel like family, romantic partners, etc. are all good! Here’s the prompt:
In a fast-paced, futuristic world, how do families maintain their relationships (or struggle to do so)? This can be families of birth, romantic partnerships, or found family.
I can’t wait to read what you’ve got!
As far as comics I’ve been reading, I started InSEXts, by Marguerite Bennett and Ariela Kristantina and OMG I’m loving it! When it comes to NSFW comics, this is an example of one that does it right. There is a story-related, character-driven reason for the NSFW content, it’s not just thrown in there for the male gaze. The women are drawn realistically, and they have agency. I also really love how Mariah and Lalita push back against their world’s repressive, Victorian social norms…and how they just keep pushing back even when others try to ostracize them. Everything about this series is so good!
Well, that’s it from me for now. As always, you can find me on Twitter, Instagram, and Threads @sarahccomics. Have a great day!
Best,
Sarah
