Hey Everyone,
Happy Thursday! I hope you’re all having a great week! As always, feel free to check out my video and/or keep on reading for all the latest updates.
Okay, so I mentioned last week that I’m going to send out an email or two with my key takeaways from the Negative Space mentoring sessions I’ve had. Well, I had the last official session on Friday, and Nahuel Fanjul-Arguijo and Alex Dvorak, the co-founders of Negative Space, generously offered to meet with me to talk about some of my questions about pitching. So after I’ll talk with them, I’ll get that email together.
So as far as project news, it feels like there has been a lot going on this week. I finished the final(ish) round of edits on Scorned April! Wooohoooo! I say -ish because once I pitch it, if I get any traction, I’m sure there will be more edits down the road. But I’m pretty happy with the point it’s at now. I want to give a huge shout-out to James Powell, the editor I’ve been working with on Scorned April. His feedback has been invaluable, and it has really helped me grow as a writer. If you have the chance to work with him, you definitely should!
I finished up the latest draft of the short I’m writing for the Mad Cave Talent Search, and I’m making edits to the short I’m working on for the Negative Space Short Comics Competition. I also wrote the first draft of a short for an anthology being edited and published by the talented Jack Holder. And I wrote the pitch document for a four-issue sci-fi series that’s been rattling around in my head. I may be jumping the gun a little with that one, but I wanted to practice pitch writing, and I wanted to get the general outline for this series out of my head and onto paper (or a Google doc, at least). Also Eze has been sending some amazing art my way for No Spell Lasts Forever #2! I’ll be sharing more soon.
Whew, it’s been a busy week! But I’ve been feeling like I have momentum, so I figure I should ride it out.
Ok, so comics I’ve been reading. I went to the Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo on Sunday and picked up a copy of Palooka #1, by Casey Van Heel and Ger Curti and re-read it a couple days ago. It’s awesome — definitely check out Casey’s work if you haven’t! It’s about a wrestler with powers who’s always given the role of the heel but wants to be a hero. And it was fun to chat with Casey because Palooka was selected as one of the pieces of student work discussed in one of Scott Snyder’s writing classes (which are fantastic, BTW!). It was nice to have the chance to meet Casy in person, after deep-diving the comic in the class.
Well, that’s it for me this week! As always, you can find me on Instagram, @sarahcookewriter and @nospellcomic, and Twitter, @sarahcookewrite.
Have a great day!
Best,
Sarah
