Hey Everyone,
Happy Thursday! I want to start off by saying thank you to everyone who watched the teaser for No Spell Lasts Forever #1! As we get closer to the launch of the campaign on October 4, seeing that kind of interest is really encouraging! If you missed the teaser in the email on Tuesday, you can watch it here.
The exciting news this week is that Elena Ominetti’s variant cover is done! And I wanted to be sure to share it with all of you before it goes out to the world. Scroll down to see it. And as always, feel free to keep reading and/or watch my video for all the updates.
Okay, so here it is…the variant cover!
It’s an homage to the original movie poster for The Big Sleep, which is a very influential movie for our protagonist, Rosette.
I think Elena’s artwork is gorgeous. Her character designs, along with the very cool aged paper effect, really capture that vintage, Old Hollywood feel that we were going for. The lettering is mine, and I’m feeling pretty self-conscious about putting it out in the world. I’ve never lettered a cover before, only interior pages, so this was a fun but also anxiety-inducing experience for me.
Elena generously offered to do the lettering, and of course she has way more experience than I do! But I wanted to try to build on my skills and give it a shot, and I think I learned a lot in the process.
In other cover-related news, Aimee Hawley is working on the pencils for the standard cover this week and I can’t wait to see what she does with it! Hopefully we’ll have some preliminary art to share with you next week. She’s going for kind of a collage layout that you see with a lot of 80s movie posters, but the overall design will have more of a vintage feel. It’s a really cool concept and I think it’s going to look awesome!
Otherwise, I’ve been working on a lot of admin stuff this week…editing the Kickstarter campaign page, creating my Facebook and Instagram ads, etc. I think I’m in pretty good shape as far as getting that stuff done in time for the launch.
As far as comics I’m reading, I’m still chugging along with the Scott Snyder Batman run. At this point, my brain has spent so much time in Gotham it’s starting to feel like I live there IRL.
I’m up to Dark Days: The Road to Metal, by Snyder, Tim Seeley, and James Tynion IV, with art by Javier Fernandez, Danny Miki, Klaus Janson, Scott Williams, John Romita, Jr., Jim Lee, and Andy Kubert. I’m enjoying it a lot. And now that I’m this far along in the Snyder run, what I’m appreciating about it is how different each arc is, but how compelling they all are. Snyder was on Batman for such a long time that he had the opportunity to explore a lot of different themes and characters, and in my opinion, he really pulled them all of well.
I also finished Embodied, the intersectional feminist comics poetry anthology from A Wave Blue World, and I loved it as much as I thought I would. I’ve really never read anything like it. It’s so interesting to see the approaches the various creators took to combining poetry and comics.
And I ordered volume 1 of Too Much Coffee Man, by Shannon Wheeler. It looks bizarre and quirky and funny and I’m really looking forward to reading it! I’ll definitely let you know my thoughts.
Well, that’s it for me for now! As always, you can find me on Instagram, @sarahcookewriter and @nospellcomic, and Twitter, @sarahcookewrite.
Have a great day!
Best,
Sarah
