Hey There,
Happy Thursday! I hope you’re having a good week. Lots of good stuff is happening this week, from a sneak peek Olive and the Ogre (scroll down to see it) to info about a FREE COMIC that’s coming your way soon! As always, feel free to check out my video update and/or continue reading for all that good stuff.
I’ll start off with a quick follow-up to last week’s email. I test drove an idea I had for a podcast, where I’d kind of take a look at some of the comics that have affected me the most and explore why I think they’re so impactful. I started off last week with Loki: Agent of Asgard by Al Ewing and Lee Garbett. I really enjoyed it, and I think I’ll continue taking a stab at some of these episode ideas here and there in future emails. If I do move forward with the podcast, you’ll all be the first to know!
Okay, so if you’ve seen my earlier emails, you know that Olive and the Ogre is the four-page story I’m working on with the very talented Sara Setna for the anthology Concrete Arcanum. The crowdfunded for that will launch on September 12, and you can sign up here to be notified. And take a look at more of Sara’s art on her Instagram and her ArtStation page.
Olive is a story about a young girl who feels out of place until she befriends an ogre named Glarf, who helps her start to appreciate the “weird” things about herself. This is the first time I’m sharing any finished work from it! And…drum roll…here’s the first page! Keep scrolling to check out the inks and the final version.
In No Spell Lasts Forever news, the excellent Aimee Hawley is continuing to work on the pencils, and they look so good! She showed me a new character design at the end of last week for a character who, in my head, is inspired by the great Elle Woods. I think her Elleness really came through on the page but in a way that allows her to fully be her own character, too. It’s very cool! Check out more of Aimee’s work on her Instagram and her website. And sign up here to be notified when the crowdfunded launches in the fall.
I promised you info on a FREE COMIC, and here it is! As a thank you for continuing to follow and support what I’m doing, I’ll be sending a free comic straight to your inbox next week! I’m planning to send a separate email with the details on Tuesday, so keep an eye on your inbox. And if you know of anyone who would want to get a free comic, send them this link to sign up for Killer Tater Tots by next Wednesday night!
As far as comics I’m reading, I just finished Batman: Zero Year and I enjoyed it a lot. It’s really interesting to see Bruce’s perspectives on being Batman at this early stage in his career and to see how some of his relationships have evolved — especially his relationship with Jim Gordon. Plus, Zero Year gives us both Bruce with a buzzcut and Jim with a beard!
Well, that’s pretty much it for me this week. As always, I’d love to connect with you on Instagram, @sarahcookewriter and @nospellcomic.
Have a great day!
Best,
Sarah
