Hey There,
Happy Thursday! Exciting things are happening this week. As always, feel free to watch my video update or just keep reading. And scroll down for my version of a lettered Batman page (more on that below)!
So I’ve been teaching myself lettering, and to do that I’ve found unlettered pages of comics that have been released by publishers to the media as teasers, and I’ve added my own dialogue. I did that recently with a page from Batman #95, by James Tynion IV and Jorge Jiménez. A quick disclaimer - I’ve been reading a bunch of old Batman comics lately and I’m a little behind on the current stuff, so I can’t confirm that it’s actually the Batmobile getting destroyed on this page. Anyway, here's what I came up with. I especially had fun with the KABOOM!
In addition to my adventures in lettering, I’ve been continuing to edit my scripts. I had a great session with Chris Staros, editor-in-chief of Top Shelf Productions, on Monday. He offers editing and mentoring services to indie creators, and his feedback has been invaluable to me. I’ve been working with him mostly on No Spell Lasts Forever, but our recent meeting was about the Cyber Force script I wrote to submit to Top Cow’s talent search. Chris told me that the first draft of that script was quite a bit more polished than the first draft I sent him last year of No Spell Lasts Forever. As I was writing it, that was how I felt, but it’s so hard to tell for sure when it’s your own writing. So getting validation that I’m improving felt really good! I’ve put a lot of work into growing as a writer, and it meant a lot to hear that it’s paying off, especially from someone at his level.
As far as comics I’m reading this week, I started Batman: Prodigal (by a number of writers and artists). I’ve enjoyed seeing Nightwing take on the Batman mantle. It’s giving him an opportunity to explore some of his insecurities, which I find pretty interesting. I’ve also been reading the current Iron Man book by Christopher Cantwell, Angel Unzueta, and CAFU. Iron Man and Hellcat’s interactions are delightful! She calls him out on his privilege and arrogance, but she does it with humor, which is exactly the right way to get through to Tony Stark! And Tony is going through a pretty interesting phase of self-discovery, too. Overall, it has been a fun read!
Feel free to reach out to me anytime on Instagram, @sarahcookewriter and @nospellcomic. I look forward to hearing from you!
Best,
Sarah
