Hey Everyone,
I hope you’re all having a good week! The big news this week is that we’re just over a MONTH away from No Spell Lasts Forever #1 launching on Kickstarter! The launch date will be October 4. Check out my video or keep on reading for all the info.
So if you caught my last email, you know that I switched the campaign from Indiegogo to Kickstarter, where there’s a more robust comics community. I’m in the process of getting the page approved, and I’ll share that link as soon as it’s live. In the meantime, you can still sign up at Indiegogo to get notified when the campaign launches — I’m going to transfer everyone who signs up there to Kickstarter, so if you want to sign up, or already have, you won’t miss out on anything.
I’ve got some awesome Early Bird specials lined up for anyone who backs the campaign in the first week. You’ll get a digital copy of Diary of Night #1, by Will Allred, Gene Gonzales, and Rus Wooton, and But I'm a Cat Person Volume 1 (chapters 1 - 4) by Erin Ptah. They’re both urban fantasy. Diary of Night has very much the same kind of nighttime city vibe as No Spell Lasts Forever. And But I’m a Cat Person is 128 pages of contemporary fantasy goodness! It features plenty of magic PLUS compelling LGBTQIA+ characters. So if you’re thinking of contributing, the first week is the best time to do it!
And another exciting tidbit! The highly talented Elena Ominetti is working on the variant cover, and she’ll probably have it wrapped up by the end of the week. It’s going to be an homage to the vintage movie poster for The Big Sleep, which is the noir film that our protagonist, Rosette, is deeply influenced by. Take a look at the poster to get an idea of what Elena’s going for. I’ll give you all a sneak peek at Elena’s variant as soon as it’s ready!
And Aimee Hawley is working on the design for the standard cover. She had an awesome idea to do kind of a collage in the style of a lot of 80s movie posters, but with a more noir, vintage mood. One of her references is this poster for Blade Runner.
Whew! There’s a lot going on leading up to the launch of the campaign! I’m pretty nervous, but also really excited!
As far as comics I’m reading, I’m still going with the Scott Snyder Batman stuff, and I’m up to All-Star Batman: First Ally, by Snyder, Rafael Albuquerque, Sebastian Fiumara, and Rafael Scavone. The All-Star stuff is a lot shorter than some of his other arcs, like Eternal or Zero Year, and these arcs really allow us to zoom in on a particular character or idea in a different way that’s really interesting. First Ally is an Alfred story that gives us a glimpse into his past. It’s influenced by pirate stories, but also has the feel of a spy movie. In a lot of ways, it feels to me like the Batman version of a Bond movie. It’s a lot like the Pennyworth TV series in that way. There’s so much Alfred and Bruce driving speedboats and flying planes while fighting villains, and I’m here for it!
Well, that’s it for me this week. As always, you can find me on Instagram, @sarahcookewriter and @nospellcomic. And I’ve been more active on Twitter lately, too, @sarahcookewrite.
Have a great day!
Best,
Sarah
