Hey There!
Happy Thursday! I hope you’re having a great week. As always, feel free to watch my video and/or check out the rest of the email for all the latest!
So my week has mostly been about getting ready to move. Move Day is Saturday, and I’m excited about the new house! I’m also excited about getting the move itself behind me. It’s always so much work!
In No Spell Lasts Forever #1 news, Aimée is finishing up the last batch of flats before moving on to the final colors. As always, her work is amazing!
And I’ve been working on the lettering and tweaking some stuff in the scripts for future issues. Speaking of lettering, I wanted to share with you the lettered version of page five! These aren’t the final colors yet, it’s still the flats, which you saw a couple weeks ago. But now with the lettering, you can get a little more of a glimpse into what’s happening on this page.
And I wanted to mention that last night was the final meeting of the comics editing class I’ve been taking through the Kubert School, taught by Mike Marts of Mad Cave, formerly of Marvel, DC, and AfterShock. I really enjoyed it! He had some really helpful insights, and it was great to connect with the other creators in the class, too. It sounds like there’s a possibility that he might be teaching more classes, and if so, I definitely recommend them!
As far as comics I’m reading, I’m continuing on with Batman: No Man’s Land and I’m up to the fourth collected volume. It’s a pretty massive storyline with a bunch of amazing creators you can check out here. For the most part, I’ve really been enjoying it. There’s some stuff that happens when Two-Face takes Renee Montoya captive that I don’t love, and that I think could have been handled differently — but alas, it was the 90s. Overall though, No Man’s Land has been enjoyable.
One of the issues I read a couple days ago was Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #125, by Greg Rucka, Rick Burchett, and James Hodgkins and…wow! It was so good! There are two pages of Babs and Tim doing some hacking to find out what shady business Penguin is up to this time. But the whole remainder of the issue is a rooftop conversation between Batman and Jim Gordon. It’s 19 pages of just the two of them! And I mean, that much Gordon content? You know I’m all about it.
The two of them are finally airing a lot of the stuff between them that has gone unsaid for a long time. Jim says he doesn’t always feel like Batman treats him as an equal. And Batman realizes he has to show Jim how much he really respects him. The dialogue is excellent, and the whole issue is just so well written.
