Hey There!
I hope you’re having a great week, and a great New Year! As always, feel free to keep on reading and/or check out my video for all the updates.
So my New Year’s Eve was pretty quiet. TBH, I was in bed before midnight, lol. But after moving into a new house the week before Christmas, a chance to just rest and relax was exactly what I needed.
As far as No Spell Lasts Forever #1 news, Aimée is continuing on with the final colors and her pages are stunning! She’s brilliant at using color to create mood, as well as visual depth. So I wanted to share with you the final versions of pages 5 and 6. You’ve seen the flats in previous emails, and I wanted to show you the final art here. I mean, is this not beautiful?? I can feel the cold and the dampness just looking at that rain, and it makes me want to curl up with a cup of hot tea!
While Aimée is finishing up her gorgeous art, I’m tying up loose ends. I’ll be trying out my fancy, new label printer this week to make sure I know how it works before it’s time to start shipping out the physical copies of the comic. And I’m wrapping up the Thank You page, the back cover, and some other details.
Also, last night, I went live on YouTube with Sam Vera to talk about his campaign for There’s an Alien in My Toilet #4. We were joined by some awesome creators including Jorge Medina, Sam’s co-host on the podcast Catch Da Craze, which they’ve been generous enough to have me on twice. You can watch the video here. I join in at around the one-hour mark, but I’d encourage you to check out the impressive creators who come on before me, too.
There’s an Alien in My Toilet is a really charming and funny all-ages sci-fi comedy, and I highly recommend checking it out!
As far as comics I’m reading, I started Monstress, by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda earlier in the week and I’m up to the second volume. I absolutely love everything about it. Maika, the protagonist, is highly sympathetic but also a little prickly, though her occasionally questionable choices are also very understandable. She’s tough as nails but doesn’t hide her emotions, and I love it!
I’m really enjoying the art, too. I think the correct adjective for it is elegant, which is interesting given the darkness and even brutality that we see at times in the story. And some of the character designs are pretty whimsical, like talking cats and adorable fox people. And you wouldn’t necessarily think that would fit with a story that really leans into its own darkness, but it works perfectly. Here’s a page from the portion I read last night:
Well, that’s it for me this week! As always, you can find me on Instagram, @sarahcookewriter and @nospellcomic, and Twitter, @sarahcookewrite.
