Hey There!
Happy Thursday! I hope you’re having a good week. To see the new pencils from No Spell Lasts Forever, keep scrolling down, and as always feel free to keep on reading and/or check out my video for all my updates.
Okay, so the big news this week is that, in a matter of mere days, Aimee Hawley will be finished with the pencils for the first issue of No Spell Lasts Forever! Woohoo! And to mark this significant occasion, I wanted to share the pencils from pages five and six. This is your first glimpse at Bash, the major supporting character! He’s the one first seen leaning on the desk in the second panel of page five. This is where the cops find out about some shady stuff that our main character, Rosette, has done.
All of Aimee’s work has just been so consistently awesome. Check out more of her art on her Instagram and her website.
I’ve been doing more of the preliminary work this week to get ready for the crowdfunder. I’m pretty sure this is the third week in a row I’ve talked about how much work it is to set up a campaign?? But I shouldn’t complain because it means we’re that much closer to bringing this comic to life! You can sign up here to be notified when the crowdfunder launches in the fall. It will most likely launch on October 4, and I’ll be confirming that soon.
I’ve also been working on an eight-page story for an upcoming anthology called Hairology. The goal of the anthology is to present a myriad of stories from people from all different walks of life about their experiences with their hair. Some of the stories will be autobiographical/slice-of-life, and others will be fictional. The one I’m working on is a sci-fi fairytale.
I’ll be sharing more soon about Olive and the Ogre, my four-page story that’s appearing in the anthology Concrete Arcanum, too. We’re gearing up for the crowdfunder in September, so I’ll have a preview and some other cool stuff to show you soon. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Sara Setna’s artwork in this story is just beautiful. Check out more of her work on her Instagram and her ArtStation page. And click here to sign up to be notified when the campaign goes live on September 12.
In comics-I’m-reading news, I’m now on the third volume of Batman: Eternal, written by Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, Tim Seeley, Kyle Higgins, and Ray Fawkes with artwork by Joe Quinones Jr., Andrea Mutti, and Fernando Blanco.
What I love about this story is how it keeps you guessing about who’s behind all the terrible crap happening in Gotham for a really freakin’ long time (though I think I probably know who it is because it’s impossible to avoid spoilers on the Internet, despite my best efforts). And there are so many misdirects — Batman and the others are led to think it might be Hush, Ra’s al Ghul, etc. Batman is getting super frustrated that he can’t figure it out. He wants it to be Ra’s so damn bad so he can be done with it because he’s just so sick of literally everything by now. This is basically Batman’s mindset at this point…
Also, Jim Gordon is still in Blackgate! WTF! I mean, I knew going in that he was going to be in there for pretty much the whole thing but as a big Gordon fan there’s only so much I can take. Jim says it himself, he wants to get the hell out of there and I could not agree more!
Also, I visited the library yesterday and checked out Displacement by Kiku Hughes. It looks like it’s going to be pretty intense and powerful, and I’m looking forward to reading it! Here’s a peek at it if you haven’t read it.
Well, I think that’s it for me this week. As always, I’d love to connect with you on Instagram, @sarahcookewriter and @nospellcomic.
Have a great day!
Best,
Sarah
