Hey There!
Happy Thursday! I hope you’re having a good week. I want to start by welcoming everyone who found my Killer Tater Tots Substack through the Urban Fantasy Club’s Doctor Strange giveaway! I had so much fun partnering with some really amazing creators for that. And as an indie creator who’s always working to get my work out there, your support and interest genuinely mean a lot to me. So thank you and welcome! I hope you enjoy what I’m doing here.
I thought I’d try a little something different this week. As always, you can continue reading for updates about my projects, and what I’ve been reading. And scroll down to see another completed page of No Spell Lasts Forever!
But with my video this week, I’m taking a stab at something new. I’ve had an idea floating around in the back of my head for a while now to do a podcast about the comics that have affected me the most, and why I think they’re so impactful. At the end of the day, I think we all love comics because of the ways in which the stories move us, and I want to take a little bit of a deeper dive into that. I’m not sure if I’m ready to do a full podcast yet though, so I thought I’d give it a trial run with some of these videos. So in this week’s video, I talk about Loki: Agent of Asgard, by Al Ewing and Lee Garbett. It’s one of my favorites, and I think it has some really compelling things to say about allowing ourselves to be the people we genuinely want to be in the world, rather than making decisions based on people-pleasing or external validation. There’s a particular page and panel from issue #16 that I mention in the video, which you can scroll past the video to see.
Okay, so as far as project updates…Sara Setna is finalizing the colors for Olive and the Ogre, which is our four-page story that will be appearing in the anthology Concrete Arcanum. She showed me the first colored page last night and it looks amazing! I’m really excited to be a part of this anthology. The crowdfunder for it will be launching on September 12th, and you can sign up here to be notified on launch day.
Also, be sure to check out Sara’s excellent artwork on her Instagram and her ArtStation page.
And in No Spell Lasts Forever news, Aimee Hawley is continuing to work on pencils for the next group of pages, and I’ve been lettering some of the earlier pages that she has already finished the colors for. In fact, I wanted to go ahead and share the lettered version of page four, which I shared the unlettered version of a while back.
I mean, how beautiful is this artwork!?? Check out more of Aimee’s art on her Instagram and her website. And sign up here to get notified when NSLF’s crowdfunder launches in the fall.
I’ll wrap up with some thoughts about what I’m reading. This week, I’ve been getting into Batman: Zero Year by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo. What I think is maybe most interesting about it is Bruce’s mindset at this point, just starting out as Batman. It seems like in some moments, he has a fair amount of trepidation about what he’s doing. But at others, like when he argues with Alfred, he’s pretty arrogant. So he’s kind of going up and down on the emotional spectrum, which is probably a pretty accurate portrayal of where his head would be at when so much about this massive endeavor he’s decided to undertake is still unknown. Overall, I’m enjoying it a lot.
And as always, I’d love to connect on Instagram, @sarahcookewriter and @nospellcomic.
Have a great day!
Best,
Sarah
