Hey There,
I hope you’re having a great Thursday! I want to start off with an ENORMOUS thank you to everyone who has backed No Spell Lasts Forever #1 on Kickstarter, and to everyone who has shared it and supported me in so many ways, like reading these emails, liking and sharing my content, and sending your words of encouragement! It’s genuinely humbling.
As always, feel free to check out my video and/or keep reading for all my news!
Okay, so an update on the campaign. No Spell Lasts Forever #1 is at about $1,700 right now. Our next stretch goal will come when we hit $2,000 and it’s a paper stock upgrade. I’m excited about it because it can make a real difference in the overall quality and feel of the printed comic. So if you want to help us hit that goal, you can pledge here. Paper stock upgrade here we come!
We already blew right past the last stretch goal, which was commissioning designs for merch. So get ready to see Rosette and Bash on t-shirts, stickers, and more!
I also wanted to let you know about some other exciting indie comics that I think you’ll enjoy. The first is Wren by Peter Taylor and Mariam Yasser. It’s described as “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen but with books pulled from the History section!” And it really delivers on that promise. Set in 17th-Century London, it follows Sir Christopher Wren, King Charles II, William Penn, and many others as they careen across London in an effort to rid the city of plague and stamp out a bloody Great Fire! It just really has this foreboding feel that’s perfect for Spooky Season.
Sign up here to get the first issue sent to your inbox for free! And keep an eye out for Peter’s upcoming Kickstarter campaign, launching next month.
The next comic I wanted to shout out is Gage and the Dragon’s Tear, written by Patrick Kellner, with art by Donny Hadiwidjaja and Ichsan Ansori, and letters by Ed Dukeshire. It’s a medieval fantasy that follows Gage, a renowned thief and assassin, on his quest to get his hands on the Dragon’s Tear, a gem with mystical powers. If you’re into high fantasy and compelling antiheroes, you’ll want to check it out!
The campaign for Issue #4 is live on Kickstarter here.
And finally, check out Bullet Adventures! It’s written by Randy Stone and Jordan Alsaqa, with art by Lara Kane and letters by Lucas Gattoni. It’s a new chapter in the life of speedy hero Dale DeSousa who, on the eve of his death, has an encounter with an acquaintance from the future and takes a journey to his past. This book really celebrates the pure fun of comics that so many of us love so much. If you want to grab a copy of this comic, the campaign ends on October 15, so now’s the time to make your move! You can find it here.
And there’s more! I’ve been on a few podcasts recently, chatting about No Spell Lasts Forever #1. You can find my appearance on The Very Occasional Podcast’s Three Minutes of Thunder with Morgan Quaid here. And watch me on Explain Yourself with host Will Allred here. And in case you just can’t get enough of me, I recently added a media page to the Substack, where you can find all of my podcast appearances.
Okay, as far as comics I’m reading, after months of binging Scott Snyder’s Batman run, I’ve moved on to finishing up the chunks of James Tynion IV’s run that I hadn’t read previously. I’m circling back to The Joker War, by Tynion and Jorge Jimenez, which I started a while back but somehow never finished. I think I got distracted with other stuff when it was coming out? So I’m glad to be reading it all the way through this time (though I’ve read the Wikipedia page so there won’t be a lot of surprises for me). It’s really interesting to see how Bruce operates as Batman without his fortune. And as strongly as I believe that Jim Gordon is the One True Commissioner of Gotham, I’ve enjoyed seeing Harvey rise to the occasion.
I’ve also been reading Tynion’s The Closet (with art by Gavin Fullerton). It’s been a big Tynion week for me! The art is gorgeous. And Tynion’s writing really conveys just how heavy everything Thom is going through feels to him. So if you’re looking for something that’s heavy and kind of depressing but in a good way, check it out!
Well, that’s it for me for now! As always, you can find me on Instagram, @sarahcookewriter and @nospellcomic, and Twitter, @sarahcookewrite.
Have a great day!
Best,
Sarah
