Hey There!
Happy Thursday! I hope you’re having a good week. This week, I’m excited to share with you Aimee Hawley’s thumbs and pencils for page two of No Spell Lasts Forever (scroll down to see them). I’ll be sharing the final, colored and lettered version soon. And as always, feel free to check out my video update and/or continue reading.
So here are the thumbs and pencils for page two. I just really love seeing the stages of an artist’s process. It’s so interesting to me to watch a page evolve.
To check out more of Aimee’s amazing work, take a look at her Instagram and her website.
It’s been a little bit of a quiet week for me, though pretty busy for Aimee and for Sara Setna, who I’m working with on Olive and the Ogre. That’s the four-page story I wrote that will be appearing in the urban fantasy anthology, Concrete Arcanum. And by the way, you can sign up here to be notified when the Kickstarter for that goes live on September 12.
Sara has been working hard this week to get those pages finished up. Her pencils are looking awesome, and I can’t wait to see the final pages at the end of the week. And I’ll be busy getting those pages lettered next week.
I feel like Sara’s character designs in particular just fit so well with the tone of the story. And I highly recommend checking out more of her work on her Instagram and her ArtStation page.
This week has been a little quieter, but I have been doing some writing on a new script. One of the things I was thinking about this morning is that I think my main supporting character needs to be fleshed out a little more. She needs more agency. I think she’s a really interesting character who has the potential to add another layer of depth to the story. So later today, I’ll be spending some time staring out a while while I work out her arc a little more in my head.
As far as comics I’m reading, I finished the first book of Clementine this week (SPOILERS AHEAD). It’s by Tillie Walden, and it takes place within the universe of The Walking Dead. It definitely feels like a part of that world, but is also 100 percent its own thing. Clementine and all the main characters are teens who were very young children when the zombie apocalypse happened, and it’s really interesting to see things from their perspective, as opposed to the adults in The Walking Dead. These characters grew up in a post-apocalyptic world and have very few memories of anything before.
The one moment that really gutted me the most was when Amos gets killed. He’s the sweetest, most kindhearted person and he’s killed in cold blood. It’s so devastating when bad things happen to a character like that, and I was literally lying in bed the night I finished the book thinking about poor Amos! It may be wishful thinking, but I’m hoping he’s not really dead and he’ll reappear in the second book. Fingers crossed!
Well, that’s pretty much it for me this week. As always, I’d love to connect on Instagram, @sarahcookewriter and @nospellcomic.
Have a great day!
Best,
Sarah
