Hey Everyone,
Happy Thursday! I hope you’re all having a good week. Check out my video update (which includes SPOILERS for Batman: Knightquest), or continue reading if that’s more your thing.
This week, I put together a free Indie Comics Resource Starter Kit for new creators, free to new Killer Tater Tots subscribers. So if you know anyone who may benefit from it, send them my way! Anyone who subscribes to the email list will receive it. It’s got resources to support new comics creators with writing, lettering, printing, and crowdfunding.
I was thinking about everything I’ve learned about making comics, specifically over the last year or so as I’ve been writing and then gearing up to crowdfund for No Spell Lasts Forever. And while I’m still a new creator myself, I realized I’ve actually accumulated a pretty useful list of resources, so I pulled them together into this PDF, which I plan to continue to add to as I learn more. What felt really good about creating the Starter Kit was that it gave me an opportunity to reflect on how much I really have learned. Like so many of us do, I often tend to downplay my own skills and expertise (it’s something I’m working on!). So having the opportunity to actually show myself in black and white how much knowledge I’ve accumulated in a relatively short period of time was a nice experience. I’d encourage you to do the same. Just take a couple minutes to acknowledge your successes and your growth. It’s easy to just constantly feel like you have to move on to the next thing, but it’s important to slow down and pause to acknowledge how far you’ve come already.
As far as comics I’ve been reading, I finished Batman: Knightquest Vol. 2 last Friday (SPOILERS AHEAD) and to be honest, I’m still thinking about it. This is the run where Jean Paul Valley has taken over as Batman because Bruce Wayne is still healing from having his back broken by Bane. Jean Paul lets an innocent person, Graham Etchison, die because he’s so caught up in his crusade and is more focused on stopping the villain, in this case Abattoir, than on saving the innocent victim. So a genuinely good person is just forgotten about and left to die alone. It really tugged at my heartstrings, like the best stories do! The two issues that stuck with me the most were by Doug Moench and Mike Manley, and Alan Grant and Bret Blevins.
And that’s it for this week! As always, feel free to connect with me on Instagram, @sarahcookewriter and @nospellcomic.
Best,
Sarah
