Hey There,
Happy Thursday! I hope you’re all having a great week. As always, feel free to check out my video and/or keep on scrolling for the latest updates!
Ok, so first things first. As promised, this week I’m sharing with you a free comic, as a thank you for continuing to support me and my work!
It’s the excellent Robyn #1 by Simon Birks and Ege Avci. Here’s a little bit about it:
Robyn is ongoing comic series about a young, intelligent and skillful girl called Robyn, who just happens to be an outlaw, surviving on her own in Sherwood Forest! Until, that is, she runs an errand for the dubious Tuck, which leads her into her greatest adventure yet; one that she cannot complete alone.
And be sure to check out Simon’s Blue Fox Comics Substack.
The next thing I wanted to talk about is how awesome my Negative Space mentoring sessions have been! As a result of being a finalist in their Comic Book Pitch Competition and being chosen as the winner of their Women’s Comic Book Writing Competition, I received a total of four mentoring sessions with some very impressive industry professionals. I’ve had the first three and the final one will be tomorrow. Let me tell you, I’ve learned so much, and I’m feeling so encouraged! After my last session, I’m planning to write another email — or maybe two — where I’ll detail some of my key takeaways. But for now, I just want to say how grateful I am for this amazing opportunity!
In project news, the shorts I’m writing for the Negative Space and Mad Cave competitions are coming along! I’ve put a lot of work into them and I think I’m finally getting them to a place where I’m pretty happy with them. And I’m about to jump into the (hopefully) final edits of Scorned April. I have so much love for that story — and I will also be so happy when the edits are done!
As far as comics I’m reading, I just finished Batman: The Black Glove, by Grant Morrison, Tony S. Daniel, Andy Kubert, and J.H. Williams III. My plan is to go back and read the parts of Grant Morrison’s Batman run that I never got around to. I’ve gotta fill in those gaps. So if you loved hearing me go on and on about all things Gotham during last year’s Scott Snyder binge, you’re gonna love what’s coming! I promise it won’t be all Gotham stuff, though.
I really loved Black Glove, and the way it calls back to all the old comics collected in The Black Casebook. But they’re not just easter eggs, the story is really a substantive expansion on that old lore, and it was really wonderful in that way. I mean, look at this! We see what you did there, Grant!
Well, that’s it for me this week! As always, you can find me on Instagram, @sarahcookewriter and @nospellcomic, and Twitter, @sarahcookewrite.
Have a great day!
Best,
Sarah
