Hey There!
Happy Thursday. I hope you’re all having a good week. I want to start off this week with the FREE COMIC I promised! It’s the first issue of Parent/Guardian, by Kyle Roberts, Rafael Romeo Magat, and Ilaria Fella, which the creators have very generously allowed me to share with my audience.
You can get it by clicking here for the Dropbox download or here for the Google Drive download.
For more info on Kyle and the comic, keep reading. And as always, feel free to scroll on down and/or check out my video for all my updates.
So Parent/Guardian is a really cool sci-fi story with awesome artwork and lots of exciting action. And at its heart, it's a story of a father trying to redeem himself in the eyes of his daughter. Here’s the cover for issue #1.
I also highly recommend checking out more of Kyle’s comics here, and following him, @kyleroberts_art, on Twitter and Instagram.
I wanted to share the comic with you as a way to say thank you for continuing to come back week after week, checking out my emails and videos, and connecting with me on social. Your interest in what I’m doing genuinely means a lot, so thank you!
Okay, in project news, Aimee Hawley is continuing to work on the pencils for No Spell Lasts Forever. At this point, she has a handful of pages left to go but more than half of the issue has been penciled. So we’re starting to get a real sense of how the book as a whole is going to flow and feel on the page, and it’s so exciting! Check out more of Aimee’s art on her Instagram and her website.
On my end, this week has mostly been about starting to prepare for the crowdfunder. I’m tentatively shooting for a launch date of October 4. That’s not official yet (I’ll definitely let you know when it is), but that’s what I’m aiming for right now. Which means now is the time to start planning the tiers, writing the emails, shooting the campaign video, etc. It’s a lot of administrative stuff, but it’s also exciting because it means we’re that much closer to making the book a tangible reality in the world!
You can sign up here to be notified when the crowdfunder launches.
As far as comics I’ve been reading, I’m continuing with Scott Snyder’s Batman run and finishing the arcs I haven’t read previously. Last night, I started Eternal (SPOILERS), by Snyder, James Tynion IV, Ray Fawkes, Kyle Higgins, and Tim Seeley, with Jason Fabok as the primary artist. It’s a pretty massive series with a fairly long list of super impressive artists and creators, and you can check them all out on the DC Fandom wiki.
So I’m really enjoying Eternal but it’s a hard read for me. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Jim Gordon is one of the very best characters in all of comics. He’s just so unfailingly good, and there’s a special place in my heart for him. Which makes Eternal a little difficult to read. Jim is framed for supposedly shooting an unarmed man and causing two subway trains to crash into each other, which results in a lot of deaths. At the point I’m at, he has just been taken into custody. Seeing Jim in handcuffs and behind bars really broke my heart! I mean, look at this! If this doesn’t bring a tear to your eye, you have a cold, cold heart of stone.
I know it’s going to get worse for him before it gets better — he spends most of this run in Blackgate Prison. And I mean, I wasn’t even a full issue in and I had to put down my iPad and take a breather to process because it’s *a lot*. Maybe I get too emotionally involved in the lives of the characters I’m attached to but honestly, how could you not??
Okay, well that’s it for me this week! If you’d like to connect with me, I’d love to hear from you! You can always find me on Instagram, @sarahcookewriter and @nospellcomic.
Have a great day!
Best,
Sarah
