Finding my creative direction
Hey There,
Happy Thursday! I hope you’re all having a great week!
I want to start this week with a question. How do you decide what projects to focus your time and energy on?
It’s something I’ve been thinking about quite a bit lately. In the coming months, Eze will be starting on the art for No Spell Lasts Forever #6, the final issue of the series. No Spell was the first comic project I ever undertook, and it has been the foundation of my comics writing career since 2019. No matter what direction other projects ended up taking, I knew I’d have No Spell as a creative anchor. It was the project that always kept me grounded.
With No Spell coming to an end soon, it feels a bit like the end of an era for me, and I’m trying to figure out what I want the next chapter to look like.
I have a lot of ideas for creative projects I’d like to work on, but figuring out my priorities is proving to be a bit of a challenge. And, in some ways, it feels deeper than that. It’s not just about deciding which pitches I want to develop — it’s about really figuring out what types of creative projects will genuinely feel meaningful. Sometimes I think I’ve put a little too much energy into developing pitches for projects I think I “should” be working on. Stories I think publishers will go for.
It’s not necessarily a bad thing to try to read the room and determine what kinds of stories readers are eager to pick up. But as a creator, your own creative authenticity should come first — at least when you’re working on creator-owned projects, as licensed properties have their own priorities.
So that’s where I’m at now. I’ve got a lot of ideas and possibilities swimming around in my head, and I’m trying to navigate my way through. I don’t have the answers yet, but I wanted to let you know that if you’re feeling similarly, I’m right there with you!
That’s it from me for now! As always, you can find me on social @sarahccomics.
Best,
Sarah
