Almost ready to pitch my comics!
Hey Everyone!
Happy Thursday! I hope you’re having a great week! As always, feel free to check out my video and/or keep on scrolling for the latest updates.
I want to start off with a quick reminder that the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse giveaway I’m hosting is going on through August 19! Add your email to get updates from a group of amazing indie creators and you’ll be entered for a chance to win $215 of Spider-Verse merch! Find more details and sign up here.
In project news, things have been moving right along this week! Jersain, Aimée, and Alex have been continuing with the art and colors for the shorts I’m working on and everything looks amazing! And I’ve been lettering the pages as they come in, too.
I’ve also been working more on the pitch for my sci-fi series, Mayfly, with the excellent editor Brittany Matter. We’ve been talking about some of the kinds of structural stuff that I wish I’d chatted with an editor about before writing the first drafts of Scorned April and No Spell Lasts Forever. With those two, I waited until I’d already finished the first draft of the entire script to talk with an editor, and it made the rewrites more challenging. I think one of the things I’m learning is how much more effective it can be to do as much of the legwork — both in terms of pitching to publishers and working with editors — before you get started on that first draft. My hope is that this will mean there will be less rewriting later. This is actually one of the topics that I plan to talk about a little more when I finally write that newsletter about my key takeaways from my Negative Space editorial meetings (which is coming soon, I promise!).
As far as comics I’m reading — I checked out No Longer Human by Junji Ito from the library a few days ago and I can’t wait to dive in! I skimmed the first handful of pages and flipped through it a little to look at some of the art, and already I love how gorgeously haunting it is. I mean, look at this!
Well, that’s it for me this week! As always, you can find me on Instagram, @sarahcookewriter and @nospellcomic, and Twitter (I refuse to call it X!), @sarahcookewrite.
Have a great day!
Best,
Sarah
